Gary Krueger: DOGS IN CARS

Joseph Bellows Gallery is happy to share Gary Krueger's charming, whimsical and sometimes fierce scenes of dogs in cars across Los Angeles. This small thematic group of canine cruisers was culled from Krueger's impressive archive of vintage, 8x10 inch gelatin silver prints. Using his quick reflexes and chrome-plated Canon F-1 camera, these images, found in the City of Angeles in the 1970s, is a nostalgic series capturing a unique slice of Los Angeles life, and blending the allure of vintage automobiles with the endearing personalities of these four-legged companions.

After graduating High School in 1963, Gary Krueger drove out west to study graphic design and photography at the Chouinard Art Institute from 1964 to 1967. Chouinard, later Cal Arts, was a professional art school founded in 1921 with notable alumni including, Ed Ruscha, Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, Edith Head, Millard Sheets, Joe Goode, and Allen Ruppersberg. Krueger collaborated with Ruppersberg on his narrative photo works including 23 Pieces (1969) and 24 Pieces (1970).

Upon graduation from Chouinard, Krueger was hired by Walt Disney for graphic design. While continuing his association with the Disney Corporation, he decided to pursue photography full-time and went on to have a successful commercial and editorial career as a freelance photographer for the company. Recognition quickly followed as he was included in numerous exhibitions, including a group show entitled: Attitudes 1972, organized by the Pasadena Art Museum and including the work of John Baldessari, among other artists.

Krueger's work is represented in the collections of The Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Black Dog Collection, among others.
