DANA MONTLACK Seeing Through Water, Seeing Through Weather June 8 – July 27, 2018 Reception: Saturday, June 16 from 6-8pm

Joseph Bellows Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming solo show by Dana Montlack. The artist’s newest body of work merges the artistic and scientific to create a visual dialogue about the vexing problem of climate change. In her new series Seeing Through Water, Seeing Through Weather, Montlack uses the shape of a droplet to reference water; bringing attention to climate change and environmental issues, Montlack allows for a new way of viewing and understanding them and in turn, positively affects the way our culture interacts with and seeks to preserve our oceans.

Seeing through Water, Seeing Through Weather brings attention to the effects of Carbon dioxide buildup on marine ecology and biodiversity. The installation of photographic images visualizes the research of Madfredi Manizza, Jules Jaffey, and Alexander Gershunov of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who investigate changes in marine life and the environment over time. If global warming continues to accelerate at the current rate, many forms of marine life may become extinct due to the permanent modifications in oceanic properties of salinity, nutrients, and oxygen.

In exploring this environmental impact, the artist combines a myriad of images: plankton and microscopic life forms are juxtaposed with bathometric and hydrographic maps, spectrograms, and nautical charts specific to California; suggesting that marine biodiversity will be greatly impacted unless global ocean warming and acidification are reversed.

Seeing Through Water, Seeing Through Weather will present a series of digitally collaged and variably sized chromogenic prints mounted to plexiglass that take the form of water droplets. The exhibition will open on June 8th and continue through July 27, 2018.

Dana Montlack holds a BFA in sculpture from the University of California at Santa Cruz, and a MFA in mixed media from the Otis Parsons College of Art and Design, Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationwide, including: the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; Museum of Art, Downtown Los Angeles, CA; Alexandria Museum of Art, Alexandria, LA; Albright-Knox Art Museum, Buffalo, NY; and CEPA Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, CA; Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, CA.
