Steve Banks | American, 1938 -
Steve Banks began his study of photography in the early 1960's at workshops offered by the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (later, the ID School), and with Richard Avedon and Marvin Israel through a master class workshop taught at Avedon’s studio. Visiting lecturers included: Lee Friedlander, Bruce Davidson, Garry Winogrand and others.
He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Leica Medal of Excellence and the Lucie International Photography Award.
In 1964 he began the long term photo essay, Nitro: Drag Racing in Southern California. Photographs from this project will be published in a forthcoming, limited edition monograph by Nazraeli Press as part of their NZ Library series.
