The Pervasive Veil of Atmosphere: Seascapes of La Jolla by Bill Rastetter
The Gallery is pleased to present The Pervasive Veil of Atmosphere, Seascapes of La Jolla by Bill Rastetter. In the tradition of the luminist landscape painters of the mid-19th century, these small-scale photographs render a uniform glow, evoking a quiet spirituality based on closely observed natural phenomena.
Rather than depict nature as grand and imposing, or strive for spectacular views, Rastetter emphasizes the quality of light, at dawn and dusk, to create calm and lucid landscapes. With exposures between 0.4 seconds and up to ten minutes, these peaceful panoramas achieve their atmospheric effect by use of a pinhole camera in place of a conventional lens, creating infinite gradations of tone, texture, and color.
La Jolla resident, William H. Rastetter (born 1948), is a scientist, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist. He earned an S.B. degree in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an M.A and Ph.D. both in chemistry from Harvard University, and when not photographing, he helps fund and develop biotechnology companies.
To ensure the safety of our visitors and staff, the gallery is open by appointment only until further notice. Appointments can be made by calling or emailing the gallery, or through our website below. We are open from Monday to Friday, 11am - 5pm. Please note that visitors are required to practice physical distancing and to wear masks inside of the gallery. Surfaces will be sanitized after each visitor.
